2022 Doctoral Research Opportunities

PhD projects funded by the China Scholarships Council

PhD projects are available at the New Zealand – China Water Research Centre, funded by the China Scholarships Council. Students will be enrolled at Lincoln University, New Zealand. The scholarship covers up to four years stipend and travel, and applications are made through the China Scholarships Council. See descriptions in the below for more information on the projects.

Emerging Researcher Fellowship

Up to $40,000 is available to support a New Zealand-based early-career researcher to establish connections with Chinese counterparts. Eligibility and scope of the funding is outlined below. Applications should address the selection criteria, stating the duration of the stay in China, and include a letter of support from the Chinese host organisation and a budget.  For further information, including details of selection criteria or to submit and application please contact:

Type of activities funded for New Zealand-based researchers:

  • Return travel to China
  • Costs of local accommodation and transportation to their host institution
  • Meals and incidentals

Types of activities NOT funded

  • Research costs
  • Travel and medical insurance
  • Supplement to study leave
  • Immediate post-doctoral training
  • Salary

Eligibility – New Zealand fellows must meet the following general eligibility requirements:

  • Have completed their PhD studies within seven years at the time of commencing the award
  • Have been awarded a doctorate at the time of application
  • Be a New Zealand citizen, have permanent residency or be applying for permanent residency
  • Have been working or studying in New Zealand in an area relevant to the fellowship activities
  • Be able to participate in the nominated fellowship activities at the time and for the duration proposed by the Chinese organisation during the Fellowship
  • Have identified suitable Chinese hosts and initiated contact with Chinese organisations to explore their interest in hosting a New Zealand Fellow (evidence provided via letter of intent)
